Home Checks

I always carry out home checks to ensure that the guinea pigs are going to a loving home for life. So many of the guinea pigs have been neglected so it important that they do go to very loving forever homes.

Due to the limited resources of the rescue I am only able to rehome within 25 miles of North Shields. I am happy to put you in touch with rescues in your area.

Donation

I ask for a minimum donation of £15 per guinea pig. This is to help contribute towards the cost of caring for the guinea pigs at the rescue. I make no profit.

New home requirements

I follow RSPCA guidelines, and I have also developed the rescues own guidance for guinea pig care, which are based on experience, and guinea pig experts' recommendations. Therefore adopters must meet the following requirements:

1.
Guinea pigs must live in same sex pairs or groups (unless neutered). Guinea pigs are very social animals and should never be kept alone

2.
Guinea pigs have a warm and dry hutch/cage and are kept on hay and newspaper, NOT wood shavings. Wood shavings are toxic to guinea pigs and can cause breathing difficulties, skin problems, and ulcerated feet. Ultimately they can lead to the premature death of guinea pigs.

3. Guinea pigs must at all times have access to unlimited fresh hay. Hay is an essential part of their diet, and therefore should make up 80% of what they eat. Guinea Pigs should also be fed guinea pig nuggets (not mixed dried food) to prevent selective nutrients and ensure they get all the nutrients they need.

Guinea pigs must also be given a range of fresh fruit/vegetables twice daily to complement their dried food.

4.
Guinea pigs must have daily access to an outdoor run or daytime playpen (indoor homes and winter). They love to graze, explore and exercise. It is essential that they have daily exercise and the mental stimulation of a different environment

5.
Guinea pigs will not be rehomed to homes where they are to be bred.

6.
Guinea Pigs will only be rehomed to live with rabbits in very exceptional cases, as usually they will be bullied by the rabbit, they also have very different dietary needs and natural habits

7.
Two guinea pigs at the very minimum will require a hutch/cage sized 48" x 24" (120cm x 60 cm) (Please see our page on indoor cages) but I always prefer bigger hutches and cages to this, and so do the piggies!

8. Guinea pigs will only be rehomed to a responsible adult (over 18 years old). I will rehome them as family pets, but NOT a child's pet.

9. If you are ever unable to look after the guinea pigs any more they must be returned to the rescue, or speak to me before passing them to anyone else's care.

You will need to sign an adoption form stating that you agree to the above.
